In a world where fitness often feels exclusive, Grit 920 stands out as a beacon of inclusivity and community. Recently showcased on the #ItsYourNeighborPodcast, their mission demonstrates how fitness can bring people together, particularly those with disabilities. Starting as a simple summer school class, Grit 920 has evolved into a program that embraces and uplifts young people of all abilities, promoting self-care and a sense of community.
Grit 920 started with a request from Sarah Morgan (Golden Apple Recipient) to Brian Gajeski: to include her summer school class in a workout session at Bode Central, the gym where Brian trains. What began as an experiment quickly revealed its positive impact. Students with intellectual disabilities and autism thrived in this new environment, showing how physical activity and community can build confidence and skills.
As the program expanded, it faced growing demand and limited resources. Despite these challenges, Grit 920 continued to thrive, thanks to community support and partnerships with organizations like Bridge the Gap and My Team Triumph. These collaborations have helped reach more individuals and ensure that fitness is a lifelong pursuit.
The podcast highlighted Grit 920’s profound impact not only on the participants but also on volunteers and mentors. Many volunteers have found that their career paths have changed, leading them to pursue careers in special education or related fields. This ripple effect demonstrates the power of inclusive community initiatives, where everyone benefits.
Looking ahead, Grit 920 aims to establish a dedicated facility for adaptive fitness, where people of all abilities can come together and thrive. This vision, still in development, is driven by a passionate team and community support, reflecting the spirit of resilience and determination.
