Algoma

Algoma is a city in Kewaunee County on the western shore of Lake Michigan, roughly 25 miles south of Sturgeon Bay and 25 miles northeast of Green Bay. The city sits at the mouth of the Ahnapee River where it enters the lake, and that harbor location has defined Algoma's character since its founding as a commercial fishing and shipping port. The harbor remains active, and the charter fishing operation out of Algoma is one of the more productive on the Wisconsin side of Lake Michigan, drawing anglers targeting salmon, steelhead, and lake trout from across the region.

Downtown Algoma runs along Lake Street parallel to the shoreline, with locally owned shops, restaurants, and galleries anchoring a compact commercial district that functions year-round. The Ahnapee State Trail connects Algoma to Casco and beyond, providing a rail-trail corridor for cyclists and hikers that extends through the county's agricultural interior. Von Stiehl Winery, one of Wisconsin's oldest licensed wineries, operates in Algoma and draws visitors throughout the season, contributing to a tourism profile that supports the local economy without overwhelming the residential character of the city.
